Featured Speaker: Kelly Gallagher

Kelly GallagherSince 1985, Kelly Gallagher has devoted himself to the teaching of reading, writing, listening and speaking—first and foremost, as a high school ELA teacher in Anaheim, California, and also as a author / consultant who works with educators around the world. Today, he is considered one of the leading voices in literacy education.

Always in search of a better way, Kelly honed his craft by taking on leadership positions in several key literacy programs, including the California Reading and Literature Project, the South Basin Writing Project at California State University, Long Beach, and the Puente Project, a University of California outreach program that prepares under-represented high school students for transition into universities. For several years, he taught secondary literacy courses as an adjunct professor at California State University, Fullerton, and, most recently, he served as the president of the Secondary Reading Group of the International Reading Association (IRA).

MILTON REYNOLDS

Nationally recognized for his expertise in equity, inclusion, diversity, and communication. He is a strategic thinker, leader, and community activist who works with non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and organizations to promote change, critical thinking, and improve the lives of others. Milton was a Senior Program Associate at Facing History and Ourselves, an organization with a global footprint and staff members in nine locations from Chicago, Cleveland, and Memphis -to London, Los Angeles, New England, New York, Toronto, and the San Francisco Bay Area, in addition to education partnerships around the world, including China, France, Northern Ireland, and South Africa.

Come walk in the woods with us. We will do some guided reflection on the meaning we create from our experiences.

BRYNN SAITO 

A poet, educator, and organizer. She is the author of two books of poetry, Power Made Us Swoon (2016) and The Palace of Contemplating Departure (2013), winner of the Benjamin Saltman Award from Red Hen Press and a finalist for the Northern California Book Award. She also co-authored, with Traci Brimhall, the chapbook Bright Power, Dark Peace (Diode Editions, 2016). Brynn is a recipient of the Kundiman Poetry Fellowship and a two-time recipient of the California State Library’s Civil Liberties Public Education grant. In 2017, Brynn co-founded Yonsei Memory Project (YMP) with Fresno artist, farmer, and writer, Nikiko Masumoto. YMP utilizes arts-based inquiry to generate dialogue connecting the WWII incarceration of the Japanese American community with current struggles for justice. Brynn was born and raised in Fresno to a Korean American mother and a Japanese American father. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing in the English Department at Fresno State.
